He stared blankly at the couch where she used to sit, patiently waiting for him to finish his work. The emptiness seemed to grow with every passing second.
The silence was deafening, filled only with the echoes of the life they had shared, the love that had been torn away too soon. He clenched his fists, the weight of her absence pressing harder on his chest.
"You were my home. My everything," he choked out, struggling to breathe as the grief consumed him.
"Without you, nothing feels right. The house, the world... itās all empty."
Vikram leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes as another tear escaped. He had built an empire, conquered the business world, and yet he felt utterly defeated by the one thing he couldnāt controlāher loss.
"I canāt do this without you, Shanaya. I donāt even know how to," he muttered, his heart aching with every word.
As time passed and evening settled in, Meher stood up from her chair, stretching slightly.
āMail me the details of tomorrowās meeting,ā she instructed her assistant, her tone sharp yet calm.
āYes, maāam,ā the assistant replied quickly, nodding as they gathered the documents and exited the room.
Meher sighed, glancing out of the large window overlooking the bustling city. The weight of the dayās work hadnāt diminished the heaviness she felt in her heart.
As much as she thrived in her professional life, there was a deep emptiness gnawing at herāan emptiness tied to the promises she had made and the complicated life she was now living.
She picked up her phone and scrolled through her messages, pausing briefly when she saw a photo of Aarvi sent by Dadi-sa. The sight of the little girlās smiling face brought a faint smile to Meherās lips, but it was bittersweet.
āIām doing this for you, Aarvi. For the life Shanaya wanted you to have,ā Meher whispered to herself before grabbing her bag and preparing to leave the office.
Lost in her thoughts, she remembered the moments leading up to this day, the promises she had made to her best friend. But fate had changed everything in an instant. Just as the car stopped, her mind drifted back to that heartbreaking day when she rushed to India, only to lose Shanaya.
āMaāam, weāve arrived,ā the driverās voice snapped her back to reality.
As she walked inside, she was greeted by the sound of Aarvi's laughter.
Meher's expression softened as she saw Aarvi playing with Dadi-sa and Dadu-sa in the living room. The elderly couple were happily clapping and cheering as Aarvi giggled and played.
Meher paused for a moment, watching the scene with a brief sense of peace. But that feeling quickly faded as she remembered why she was really there. Vikramās presence in the house hung over her like a heavy shadow.
āCome here, beta,ā Dadi-sa called kindly, noticing Meher standing by the door.
āLook at Aarvi, sheās becoming more playful every day!ā
Meher walked up to them and sat down.
Aarvi, seeing Meher, placed her tiny hands on the floor and slowly started to stand.
Meher, Dadi-sa, and Dadu-sa gasped in surprise, and Dadi-sa quickly called out to Vikramās mother.
Aarvi, wobbly on her little feet, stood up, and the elders sat down, encouraging her to come toward them.
Aarvi, with shaky legs and holding onto the couch for support, slowly walked in Meherās direction. Just as she was about to fall, Meher swiftly picked her up, holding her close.
Looking at Aarvi with soft eyes, Meher whispered,
āI promised your mumma to protect you at any cost, and I will, little one, even if it costs me my life.ā Aarvi placed her small hands on Meherās cheeks and smiled, babbling in her baby language, her innocent laughter filling the room.
Dadi-sa and Dadu-sa were overwhelmed, their hearts full as they witnessed the love and care Meher had for Aarvi. The bond between them was clear, and it moved them deeply.
However, Maa-sa stood in the background, her face expressionless as she watched the scene unfold. Her eyes lingered on Meher before she spoke, āMaaji-sa, itās time for your medicine. Letās go,ā she said, standing up and gesturing for Dadi-sa to follow. Without another word, she turned and walked away, her demeanor cold and distant.
Meher, feeling the weight of Maa-saās coldness, held Aarvi tighter, determined to keep her promise, no matter the challenges ahead.
After Sometime
Meher walked into her room to freshen up. The weight of the day lingered on her shoulders, but she knew she had to keep going.
As she splashed water on her face, she glanced at herself in the mirror. The reflection staring back at her felt like a strangerāso much had changed, yet she remained resolute.
Wiping her face with a towel, she sighed deeply and muttered to herself, "I canāt afford to break now."
With renewed determination, she changed into more comfortable clothes, ready to face whatever came next in this strained household.
She glanced at the clockāit was nearing dinnertime, and she knew she'd have to face Vikram soon.
Just as she was about to head downstairs, a soft knock on the door startled her. She opened it to find Dadi-sa standing there, a gentle smile on her face.
"May I come in?" Dadi-sa asked.
Meher immediately stepped aside and said, āSorry,ā allowing her to enter the room.
āAarvi is playing with her Dadu-sa,ā Dadi-sa stated with a warm chuckle before continuing, āI thought Iād take a moment to speak with Aarviās mother.ā
Meher glanced at her, unsure of what was coming next. She motioned for Dadi-sa to sit, taking a seat beside her.
Dadi-sa looked at Meher with a soft but knowing expression.
āBeta, I see how much you care for Aarvi. Youāve stepped into a difficult role, but youāre doing more than anyone expected. I wanted to thank you.ā
Meher, feeling a lump rise in her throat, smiled faintly. āI promised Shanaya Iād take care of her. Thatās all Iām doing.ā
āI know,ā Dadi-sa said softly, āBut youāre doing much more than just fulfilling a promise. Youāve given Aarvi the love and care she deserves. For that, weāre all grateful, even if some of us may not show it.ā
Meher lowered her gaze, her heart heavy with the weight of her responsibilities. Before she could respond, Dadi-sa gently placed a hand on hers.
āJust remember, you donāt have to carry this burden alone, beta. You are family now.ā
Meher looked up, her eyes meeting Dadi-saās, but she remained silent, unsure of how to feel about the word āfamily.ā
With that, Dadi-sa left the room, leaving Meher alone with her thoughts. She stood by the window, staring out at the garden below, where Aarviās laughter echoed faintly from a distance. Her heart ached, conflicted between her loyalty to Shanaya and the reality of her present situation.
āIām doing this for her... nothing more,ā Meher whispered to herself, repeating it like a mantra as if trying to convince her heart of the same.
